COVID19 in New York City vs. US

New York City COVID19 information compared to the United States… by the numbers.

We shut down our economy and put more than 33,000,000 people out of work in order to “flatten the curve”. They said it would take 2 to 3 weeks. That was 8 weeks ago. The curve was flattened in most regions 4 weeks ago.

The five boroughs – that make up NYC – Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island, have a total population 8,390,000.

As of May 24, 2020 New York City has:

  • 197,000 cases
  • 180,815 recovered
  • 16,149 deaths

COVID19 deaths in NYC are 0.19%, less than 2 tenths of 1% of the total population.

The COVID19 survival rate for confirmed cases in NYC is 91.7%

7,638 COVID19 deaths happened in NYC nursing homes… which is 47% of the total deaths in New York City.

The data clearly shows that the chances of contracting COVID19 in both the United States and in New York City is exceptionally low. But… if an elderly person contracts COVID19 in NYC their chance of death rises quite a bit.

Not only was our decision on strict lockdowns highly misguided, but Governor Cuomo’s order to move COVID19 patients into nursing homes was deadly.

Let that sink in.

All the data accumulated in the past eight weeks suggests that we should have stuck with our traditional practice during a pandemic of quarantining those who are sick… not the healthy. We should have had the elderly and those with underlying health conditions (comorbidities), stay home while healthy people went to work. Florida did not move people sick with COVID19 into nursing homes, but instead protected the elderly people living in those location. Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio moved COVID19 patients into nursing homes, with a deadly outcome.

For Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio to move people sick with COVID19 into nursing homes is unforgivable given the decades of medical data we know about how much more susceptible the elderly are to viruses. These two elitist arrogant big government loving fools should be thrown out of office.
